GROSJEAN WOULD LIKE TO SAY I M OKAY

Romain Grosjean’s horrifying Bahrain Grand Prix crash and the sight of his Haas Formula 1 car torn in two has prompted incredulity and relief he was able to survive.

It is a testament to the sustained safety drive undertaken by F1 and the governing body the FIA, including the introduction of the halo driver protection device, that Grosjean not only survived but got out of the car and jumped over the barrier under his own steam.

Romain Grosjean has declared the halo the “greatest thing we brought to Formula 1” after it saved his life following a horrific opening lap crash in the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Grosjean, who is chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), was originally against the introduction of the head protection device, claiming it “has no place in F1”.

However following his crash, which saw him impact the Turn 3 exit barrier at 221km/h (137mph), causing his Haas car to split in half, burst into flames and penetrate the steel armco barrier, the Frenchman’s attitude has changed.

“Hello everyone, just wanted to say I’m okay, well, sort of okay, thank you very much for all the messages,” he said from his hospital bed in a video message.

“I wasn’t for the halo some years ago but I think it’s the greatest thing we brought to Formula 1 and without it I wouldn’t be able to speak to you today.

“Thanks to all the medical staff at the circuit, at the hospital, and hopefully I can soon write you some messages and tell you how it’s going.”

Grosjean suffered burns to his hands and ankles and there were fears he may have broken his ribs and toes, but following an X-Ray, no fractures or breaks were found.

He will remain in hospital overnight as a precautionary measure.
