A bitterly disappointing day after taking that historic first pole.
Brilliant in the race’s early sages, Stroll was dominating the grand prix with the assurance of a veteran. But the tyre usage which had helped him on Saturday counted against him today.
He took perhaps just a little too much out of the first set, was forced to pit – and could found no pace at all on his second set of inters. It all just slipped away from him and what began as a glorious-looking race ended with an anonymous ninth.
Lance Stroll was left perplexed by his lack of pace during the second half of the Turkish F1 Grand Prix.
Stroll stormed to a shock maiden pole on Saturday and dominated the opening laps of the race in Turkey.
Things started to go wrong for Canadian driver when Racing Point opted to pit him for a second set of intermediates from the lead despite questioning the call over team radio.
Following his second pit stop, Stroll dropped to fourth place but then was quickly overtaken by the two Ferraris, Alexander Albon, Carlos Sainz and later Lando Norris.
Stroll ultimately finished the race in ninth place and he was left confused by his pace after his second pit stop after dominated the early part of the grand prix from pole position.
“It was [a] new [set of tyres], but just grained again massively, no pace,” Stroll said. “So we have to look into it, [it] was pretty terrible today.
“I mean I don’t understand, we had so much graining on the first set of Inters, we decided to pit, [we] were losing seconds per lap. don’t know where the graining came from, it happened instantly.
“It’s frustrating when you’re in the lead by 10 seconds and you finish ninth, I don’t understand how it happened. I mean I do, it’s graining, but we need to look into why it hit me so much.”
Racing Point opted to keep teammate Sergio Perez out on the same set of intermediates for the remainder of the race.
Perez came home in second place to ensure Racing Point maintained third in the constructors’ championship over McLaren and Renault going into the final three races of 2020.
