2020 IMOLA GRAND PRIX CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS

Mercedes has clinched its seventh F1 constructors’ championship in a row following another 1-2 finish at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Going into this weekend’s race at Imola, the German team simply needed a fourth-place to secure a record seventh constructors’ title.

Lewis Hamilton secured a comfortable victory, having made the most of an extended opening stint on the medium tyres which allowed him to overcut teammate Valtteri Bottas – who suffered floor damage throughout the whole race.

Mercedes was on course for a 1-3 finish until Max Verstappen suffered a right-rear tyre failure, resulting in a late Safety Cari period.

Mercedes’ latest triumph in 2020 means it now holds the record outright for consecutive constructors’ title wins, with the record being shared with Ferrari at six apiece prior to this season.

Its latest triumph means the partnership of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas has claimed four constructors’ titles in a row – matching Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber’s four for Red Bull between 2010 and 2013.

Mercedes’ current duo will have to take the 2021 title – should Hamilton sign a new deal with Mercedes – to match Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barichello’s record of five as Hamilton and Bottas look to become F1’s most successful teammate pairing in terms of constructors’ titles.

Since the introduction of the V6 hybrid engines in 2014, Mercedes has won every drivers’ and constructors’ title.

Lewis Hamilton has won five (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019), while Nico Rosberg claimed the other one in 2016.

The Briton is set to win this year’s drivers’ championship as he leads Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas by 86 points with four races left.

Hamilton is now set to take his seventh title at Istanbul Park next time out at the Turkish Grand Prix.

A HUGE RESULT WAS STILL ON THE CARDS FOR GASLY, BUT..
