STEWART VETTEL SHOULD'VE RETIRED FROM F1

Sebastian Vettel should have decided to retire from Formula One rather than continue racing, according to three-time champion Jackie Stewart.

So Stewart would have preferred Vettel to play a social role for Formula 1, instead of being a driver for a team. The triple F1 world champion can think of a good reason why Vettel will continue to drive a little longer.

As a four-time World Champion with 53 race wins to his name, Vettel has cemented himself in the history books as one of Formula 1’s greatest.

However, Ferrari’s SF1000 of 2020 is a far cry from the heights which the Scuderia want to reach, and neither Vettel or Charles Leclerc have any chance of getting near the Mercedes at the front of the pack.

“Ferrari is one of the greatest brands that has ever lived,” Stewart told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“But for whatever reason this year has been a disaster for them, and I hope and pray that next year we can see Ferrari as we really should be.”

However, Vettel won’t be a part of Ferrari next year after the team told him that his contract wouldn’t be renewed for 2021.

And on performances along the German has looked well past his best, suffering a catalogue of errors in this season alone while he is all the way down in P13 in the Drivers’ Championship.

But instead of retiring, he will join Aston Martin for 2021 as the brand looks to build themselves up through the German’s star power once they leave behind the Racing Point identity at the end of 2020.

That being said Stewart would have liked to have seen Vettel retire from Formula 1 and get involved with the wider racing community where he could become a “great ambassador”.

Stewart had been speaking from the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

“Sebastian Vettel is a really nice gentleman, he’s had a wonderful career, and I personally would love to see him retire and do what I do, go to some of the best events, get involved with some of the best multinational corporations,” he explained.

“He’d be a great ambassador for the sport apart from anything else.”

However, Stewart also completely understands Vettel’s decision to continue in Formula 1.

“But if he wants to continue racing it will be because he loves the sport,” said the Scotsman.
