RED BULL OUT OF BREATH

Energy drink maker motorsport boss Helmut Marko told German Auto Motor und Sport about the prospects, saying it would be impossible to replace Honda with a new entrant.

“No one will devote that much energy to engine development for the next four years until the next set of rules. And everyone knows you can’t start competitively right away. Hybrid technology is too complicated and expensive to do this, ”he said, adding that costs also played a role in Honda’s departure.

“We should have cut spending earlier. But from 2022, new cylinder heads will be needed again to run the engines with 20 percent biofuel, and then in 2023, again, a new engine will be needed for 100 percent e-fuel. Extra expenses that viewers see nothing of, ”he complained.

“In fact, we can get an engine (by 2022), but we don’t necessarily want any of them,” he pointed out that while he likes the Mercedes, they probably can’t use it, Ferrari is currently completely uncompetitive, and Renault doesn’t seem like an ideal partner either.

“If we choose Renault, we get an engine that is built to suit their own needs, adapted to their own caste. Again, that would only be a compromise for us. ”

Honda seems open to handing over its own resource license to Red Bull, but Marko isn’t enthusiastic about running his own engine program:

“The problems would already come in 2022: we would have to convert the engine to biofuel immediately, and we know very well how complex this technology is. We have to take that into account. ”

It follows from the above that the departure of Red Bull cannot be ruled out either…

“If we can’t find a competitive solution, it’s also an option,” Marko admitted. “Max (Verstappen) has a competitive engine in his contract, and of course we want that ourselves. Without an engine to win a world title, we are not interested in the F1 project. ”
