HONDA ALWAYS THAT EXCUSE

Given that Honda’s quest to develop carbon-neutral technology has been cited as its reason for leaving Formula 1.

The intense R&D required for what Honda Group’s chief operating officer Takahiro Hachigo describes as, “the biggest technical challenge facing the industry in over half a century,” means that F1 has become obsolete to Honda’s needs.

Michael Schmidt does not understand Honda’s excuse to leave Formula 1 after 2021.

According to the F1 journalist, it is a ‘standard excuse’ and ‘not even true’ what the Japanese say about the development of future technologies. Schmidt finds the announced departure suspiciously similar to earlier departures from F1.

“For the fourth time after 1969, 1992 and 2008 Honda said goodbye to Formula 1”, Schmidt begins his column on Auto, Motor und Sport. “This time’s apologies are similar to those of the last and penultimate times. As if someone took the text out of the drawer and then updated it”.

Schmidt cannot understand why Honda made this choice. “I just can’t quite understand it. Always that excuse about the new technologies you have to take care of. In 2014, Formula 1 imposed a technology on manufacturers that resulted in the most efficient hybrid drives available,” says the German reporter.

According to Schmidt, Red Bull would do well to switch back to Renault. “Red Bull will have to look for a new partner, even if it will eventually become Renault again. The Renault V6 turbo is not even the worst solution. It is currently the second best engine in Formula 1,” says Schmidt.

“But perhaps Red Bull needs to freshen up contact with the Volkswagen Group,” Schmidt continues. CEO Herbert Diess recently stated that Formula E is actually a wasted effort and that it would be better to come up with e-fuels in Formula 1. “With Red Bull, VW would have the perfect partner to start with,” concludes Schmidt.
