If you want to get a true indication of what the 2020 Ferrari is currently capable of, you should probably take a median average between what Leclerc’s doing and what Vettel does. A four-time champion shouldn’t be spending his afternoons finishing near the back and only getting airtime when he’s the launchpad for comedy Romain Grosjean incident. 

Sebastian Vettel did not have a good race at the Russian Grand Prix. The German Ferrari driver finished the race in an inglorious thirteenth position, among the other customer teams of the Scuderia. He particularly regrets the bad start of the race.

“I didn’t have a good first lap and so couldn’t take advantage of the start,” Vettel told motorsport-magazin.com. “Then I got stuck in traffic, which eventually caused my tires to wear out too quickly.”

The German world champion started the race on the medium tire. Vettel did thirty laps on his first set, something that did him no harm in the end. He drove on for too long in the same compound.

“I was kept out to hold up the Renaults, and that didn’t help my race. I might have had a chance to win one point, but that doesn’t make the difference.” The blockade worked, and the German managed to keep the Renaults behind him long enough to ensure Leclerc got good points.

However, he does not understand Ferrari’s decision. Vettel had been fighting on the same rubber for too long. “I should have stopped earlier. It didn’t make sense to stay out any longer as far as I am concerned. We were pretty slow.”
