RAIKKONEN RENEWS CONTRACT WITH ALFA ROMEO SCHUMACHER MAKES DEBUT IN GERMANY

Formula 1 doesn’t seem to be rid of cult hero Kimi Raikkonen yet. The Finnish driver, who this weekend equals Rubens Barrichello for the record of most Grands Prix, remains loyal to his current employer for the 2021 season, according to renowned journalist Roger Benoit of the Swiss medium Blick.

Fans can expect an announcement from the Alfa Romeo Formula 1 team that Raikkonen will remain active in the royal class of motor racing next season, following the Grand Prix weekend in Russia. This may also mean the departure of Antonio Giovinazzi, as Ferrari would like to appoint one of its juniors.

Mick Schumacher, son of Michael Schumacher, seems to be sitting on the hot seat for Giovinazzi’s seat. Rumours are further reinforced by the fact that the leader of the Formula 2 standings this season will be driving a free practice session at the Nürburgring for the Swiss team.

That is reported by Blick. According to the Swiss media outlet, Raikkonen made a decision before 15 September. The Finn has decided to stick with it for another season, as he still enjoys driving at the pinnacle of motorsport.

This news would mean that there is only one other spot left to be filled for 2021. At the moment, Antonio Giovinazzi is competing for Frederic Vasseur’s team, but the Italian does not seem to be able to count on a contract extension. Candidates for the seat next to Raikkonen would be Mick Schumacher, Callum Ilott, Sergio Perez, Nico Hulkenberg and Robert Shwartzman.

The aforementioned media outlet also knows that Mick Schumacher will be making his appearance at the Nürburgring for ninety minutes in the C39 on 9 October. For the son of seven-time world champion Michael, that would be his official debut in an F1 car.
