RENAULT IN TALKS WITH FIA OVER ALONSO 2020 F1 TEST

Next season Alonso will return to the Formula 1 grid, signing with Renault for a third stint.
Renault wants to use Fernando Alonso during the tests in Abu Dhabi after the season. According to Motorsport, the French Formula 1 team is in talks with the FIA about permission. Team boss Cyril Abiteboul says the hungry Alonso has convinced the team to bring his return forward.
“I get the feeling that he wants to give it a try,” Abiteboul says. “Even in today’s car. So we’re looking at the possibility of doing that, but we’re sensible”. Abiteboul means that Alonso won’t be driving in free practice. “Frankly, he doesn’t need that. But we would like to see him in our car”.
Because Renault does not want Alonso to drive a free practice, the team has limited opportunities to have the Spaniard test the current car. Formula 1 testing rules have been changed for this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The test at the end of the season in Abu Dhabi will only take one day, where it used to take three days.
ABITEBOUL: “WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THIS WITH THE FIA”
According to the team leader of Renault, the best chance is the Abu Dhabi test after the current season. “We have yet to see if it can be done on the basis of the test criteria,” he says. “So that’s what we’re talking to the FIA about.” With so many drivers changing teams next year, it is not impossible that Renault will not be the only one trying to ease restrictions and gain some mileage with their 2021 drivers in Abu Dhabi.
