The pair traded times separated by hundredths of a second, but the battle was decided in unsatisfying circumstances when Esteban Ocon spun, bringing out the yellow flags and forcing Bottas to abort his final run.

( Verstappen P3 – Mercedes ) – Verstappen couldn’t beat his best time from Q2 with his first run. Asked where the team could improve his balance Verstappen said: “It’s fine, I just didn’t have grip.”

Max Verstappen is satisfied with his third starting position for the Grand Prix of Tuscany. This weekend the drivers will drive for the first time on the circuit in Mugello, the home circuit of Ferrari. The Red Bull seemed to be doing well on the track, as did the Mercedes, which occupies the front row.

“Personally I didn’t expect to fight them in qualifying”, Verstappen refers to Mercedes. “This weekend looks generally promising. We come from Monza where it was difficult. We can be very happy to finish third”.

The wind caused trouble for Verstappen in Q3

Verstappen noticed that he had a harder time in Q3. “To be honest, I felt the wind was picking up in Q3. My first run wasn’t great. My second run was a bit better, but the wind increased, so the track wasn’t doing the same. It is what it is.”

“You drive slower on the straights and at certain parts, you notice that the car breaks out a bit more. I could still improve my time a bit, so that’s a bit of a shame. It wouldn’t have resulted in a position, of course, but otherwise, we could have been a bit closer. ”

“I think it is generally positive this weekend. I think everyone was quite happy with the red tyre [in Q2]. If we have a good start, let’s start with that. Then we’ll see what happens. ”
