VERSTAPPEN: “I’M GLAD THIS RACE IS OVER, THE WHOLE WEEKEND SUCKED”

The team that really should be there to capitalise when Mercedes gets it wrong was virtually absent in this race.
Max Verstappen admitting that his muted qualifying result was an indictment of the 2020 Red Bull-Honda’s actual pace was one thing, but both drivers made a mess of the original start and opening laps and were never in the hunt even before Verstappen retired.
If Honda had been lagging behind its rivals on power still, then Monza pain would’ve been understandable. But Honda won the race
Engine problems prevented Max Verstappen from finishing the Italian Grand Prix. Shortly after the restart, the Dutchman parked his Red Bull Racing car in the pitbox. Afterwards he is happy that the weekend is over.
At the start Verstappen fell back from P5 to P8. “I immediately had wheelspin and I had to get off the throttle, because I sat in the middle and saw them (other drivers’, red) coming”, said the Dutchman against Ziggo Sport. “I slowed down in order not to suffer any damage. After that I was in a DRS train, so you don’t get past that. I couldn’t do that much about it”, he sums up the start of the race.
Just after the code red, caused by Charles Leclerc’s crash, the Dutchman fell back. Not much later he stepped out of his car. “I had a problem with the engine, right from the start. I don’t know exactly what it was, but at least something with the engine”, says the Dutchman. “I’m glad this race is over, because the whole weekend sucked”.
Nevertheless, the 22-year-old Dutchman is happy with the victory of former teammate Pierre Gasly. “On the other hand, I am happy for AlphaTauri, that they win here after all that. That 2019-Red Bull is not so bad”, he said with a wink.
