HULKENBERG WILL RACE NEXT WEEKEND

After being called up at the last minute to replace Sergio Pérez at Racing Point, Nico Hülkenberg did not complete one mile in the race.

Sergio Perez looks set to be self-isolating until after the next race after a positive coronavirus test

Nico Hulkenberg is to get a second chance to race at Silverstone in a 2020 Racing Point after his rollercoaster weekend ended in disappointment due to a mechanical failure before the start of the British Grand Prix.

The German had been drafted in at the last minute after Sergio Perez tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, having to make a U-turn at an airport in Cologne to fly to the UK and begin the necessary paperwork and testing to enter the F1 bubble.

The veteran of eight full F1 seasons qualified in 13th position less than a tenth of a second behind teammate Lance Stroll but did not even make the starting grid on Sunday after the team discovered an issue with the car when trying to fire it up in the garage.

However, i understands that Hulkenberg, who holds the record for the most F1 races without a podium, is likely to get a second chance to shake off that particular unwanted title when the cars go out at Silverstone in a week’s time in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.

“If there is a next weekend, today would have been very important,” said Hulkenberg, who was hoping to maximise the amount he could learn about the car as well as go racing.

“It’s a bit crazy. Somehow it fits in!

“The team tried everything, it was some sort of problem in the power unit.”

Ted Kravitz confirmed on Sky Sports F1 that the FIA has imposed ten days of quarantine. This means that Sergio Perez will not be able to attend the 70th anniversary of Formula 1 at Silverstone next weekend.

This will give Nico Hülkenberg the chance to shine in the Racing Point during the race next week. The German driver was unable to start the British Grand Prix today due to a motor problem with the RP20.

Next weekend will be the second Grand Prix at Silverstone called the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. The race will be a one-time event in honour of the 70th Anniversary of Formula 1.

Grand Prix of Spain

Should Perez test negative after his 10-day isolation, he will be expected in the car for the Spanish Grand Prix. Szafnauer has already let us know that he is considering the possibility of contracting Hülkenberg as a permanent reserve driver.
