F1 RACING POINT TEAM BOSS SZAFNAUER DOES NOT UNDERSTAND RENAULT

Racing Point has built a second Mercedes W10. According to team leader Otmar Szafnauer, the project had been planned for a long time.

Racing Point team boss Otmar Szafnauer is not afraid of the protests against his team due to the alleged illegality of the RP20, which is said to be too similar to the 2019 Mercedes. According to the Romanian, though, the car is completely legal and the FIA agrees.

“We know the rules and we know what is and is not allowed”, explains Szafnauer to Auto, Motor und Sport. “We have adhered to it one hundred percent. The FIA was already in our factory in March. We were able to tell them how we got this car and they think we are one hundred percent legal. We only have to explain it to the stewards, who were not there at the time, of course.”

Szafnauer does not understand why Renault is in the lead of the protest, and why they are hopeful that the outcome of it will be detrimental to Racing Point. In fact: he laughs a little bit about it. Each team takes pictures of the other cars hoping to find a technological detail to copy. “But some are better at copying or integrating knowledge of photos into their cars”, he says with a small smile on his face.

Copying from other teams is also not something new for Racing Point and Force India, its predecessor. Initially, the racing team was forced to do so due to limited financial resources, a situation that no longer persists in 2020 due to the financial injection of a number of Canadian investors. “In 2009, we were the first team to successfully rebuild the Brawn GP double diffuser. We were earlier than Toyota, Williams and even Red Bull.”

The same goes for McLaren’s F-duct. We were the first after them to implement that technicality on our cars”, Szafnauer recalls.
