F1 : STORY BEHIND FERRARI’S ENGINE PROBLEMS

The impotence of the Federation (but a technician admits industrial espionage), the history of Racing Point, and affiliated teams: the credibility of the sport is at stake.

Corriere della Sera has information about the 2019 Ferrari engine. According to the Italian medium, spying on the team did take place. Otherwise, it would not have been possible to obtain sufficient evidence to make the claims about the engine, that have been made last year. It has been suggested that the information about the Ferrari engine has not been collected entirely legally.

“There is a spy story behind the problems that are currently playing at Ferrari,” said Giorgio Terruzzi, who is a Formula 1 journalist at the newspaper. “Inspired by the victory of Charles Leclerc in Monza in 2019, the competition went after the Ferrari engine. And that while all the teams look for the limits of the regulations”.

“An industrial espionage operation took place with the help of a Ferrari insider, who helped with the investigation”. According to Terruzzi, doubts have been raised about how the information was gathered against Ferrari, and whether it was legal.

According to the sports newspaper journalist, the fact that Ferrari has not been found guilty in the end is because the FIA does not have enough resources to conduct a thorough investigation. “Besides, the FIA knows that all engine manufacturers are working on the limit, while they want to take as little risk as possible. “That’s why no irregularities could be found at Ferrari”.

Since the Ferrari engine has been restrained, the Maranello team has been struggling. “Ferrari’s aerodynamic problems are a result of this process. The Italian technicians had to – against their will – build a car with less top speed because it had to be driven with a ‘clean’ engine”.

HOW PEREZ CAN PROTECT HIS SEAT AT RACING POINT?

“According to many insiders, the only ‘clean’ engine in use at the moment.” Every engine supplier has its tricks, Terruzzi thinks. But here again: “Evidence is needed to go after such a violation. This can only be obtained with the help of espionage or a whistle-blower”.
