MEXICAN PRESIDENT STARTS ONLINE CAMPAIGN URGING RACING POINT TO KEEP SERGIO PEREZ OVER SEBASTIAN VETTEL

The rumor that Sebastian Vettel is set to sign with Racing Point/Aston Martin for 2021, is really beginning to build a head of steam.

The 4-times world champion is reportedly closing in on a deal with the Silverstone-based outfit, at the expense of Sergio Perez. Earlier today, a big hint about Perez’s future with the team was dropped, courtesy of the Mexican’s agent.

Now this time, the next person to add more fuel to the ‘Vettel to Aston Martin’ fire is a former president! Mexico’s former president Felipe Calderon, to be precise.

Former Mexican President drops tweet regarding the future of Sergio Perez with Racing Point

Calderon took to Twitter and dropped a huge hint about Checo Perez’s future with Racing Point. His tweet read (translated by Google), “This could be the last season in @RacingPoint and maybe in @F1 of @SChecoPerez. Last chance to win a GP. Although he is a better pilot and with better results, upon Vettel’s arrival it is difficult to remove the other pilot, the owner’s son.”

Despite no concrete evidence yet, it seems only a matter of time before an announcement is made by Racing Point. Were it any other team, Perez would have certainly kept his seat. Unfortunately for him, teammate Lance Stroll holds the key connection that helps him nail down a spot for 2021.

Perez’s options for a 2021 drive aren’t too many. Rumors suggest that the Mexican will either don a Haas racing suit or an Alfa Romeo one next season. However, truth be told, neither of the teams will provide Checo with the opportunity to add to his 8 podiums. If he wants to pop the champagne again, this season gives him the best opportunity to do so.

He has already made an impressive start this season with back to back P6 finishes in Austria. In fact, his performance in the second race won him the accolade of ‘Driver of the Day.’ He would have probably finished the second race in P4 had a collision with Alex Albon not damaged his front wing. Nevertheless, climbing 11 places after a P17 start is worthy of high praise.

Equipped with a car that can seriously challenge for a place on the podium, Perez would want to take full advantage of that, starting from Hungary. Especially in the knowledge that he might never again be in such a competitive car.
